Protecting trees during construction, especially sidewalk projects, requires commitment and cooperation from all staff and contract partners. Urban foresters and arborist constantly fight for tree consideration and protection but often have limited resources or influence. Over his 20+ year's experience at Michigan State, Paul Shwartz, has developed a protocol that works. With a combination of creative solutions, strong specifications and lots of communication, Michigan State's tree population thrives as the campus infrastructure continues to improve.
